In response to the rising water levels in the Beas, Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal on Monday visited the flood-affected fields in Baupur Jadid, reaching farmers and residents by tractor to assess the situation firsthand. He assured the public that the district administration is prepared to provide all assistance and maintaining constant contact with local communities.
The DC reviewed the ongoing flood-prevention and relief operations, noting that the river is flowing at 1.05 lakh cusecs and that there has been no increase in the water level over the past 12 hours. Heads of key departments, including the SDM, Drainage, Revenue, and other relevant agencies, have been directed to remain on high alert and ready to respond to any emergency.
As a precautionary measure, Government High School and Government Primary School in Baupur Jadid have been closed for two days to ensure student safety. Relief centres have been identified in the affected areas to facilitate the safe relocation of residents. The administration has also arranged dry rations, green fodder for livestock and essential medicines, while teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) remain on standby.
Panchal confirmed that nearly 20,000 sandbags are being prepared under the MGNREGA scheme to reinforce the Dhussi embankment. He urged residents not to panic, adding that the Drainage Department is in continuous coordination with the Pong Dam authorities to monitor water releases and ensure steady outflow at the Harike Headworks.
