De-watering of village ponds completed in Kapurthala

The district administration of Kapurthala has completed the cleaning of 612 village ponds across the district amid the monsoon.

Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal stated that de-watering of 612 ponds in the district has been completed which will help prevent overflow during the entire monsoon season.

Additionally, desilting of ponds is also underway. Currently, 208 ponds in the district are being desilted on a war footing. Many ponds do not require desilting as they have been constructed under the Thapar model, he added.

He further said the Department of Rural Development and Panchayats had set a target to ensure the cleaning of all ponds and water bodies in the villages.

Accordingly, the ponds were emptied and the machinery was used for cleaning. He also added that where necessary, further desilting and re-silting of ponds will be carried out.

Strict instructions have been issued to municipal corporations as well to monitor the situation and take measures at their level to prevent water overflow.

The DC appealed to the public to contribute towards the cleanliness of their village ponds and avoid dumping household waste or plastic in them, so the ponds and water bodies can remain clean and well-maintained.

Meanwhile, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Varinderpal Singh Bajwa reviewed the cleaning work of ponds in various villages. He mentioned that Block Development and Panchayat Officers (BDPOs) have been instructed to monitor the process to ensure timely completion and maintain the quality of work.
