The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the state of Punjab to take a decision on the issue of providing free-of-cost access to Indian citizens visiting the Jang-e-Azadi Memorial in Kartarpur in Jalandhar. The Bench directed the state to take a call on a representation filed in this regard.

The direction by the Division Bench came on a petition filed in public interest Nitin Mitto.

Among other things, the petitioner argued that similar privileges were provided for citizens visiting other memorials, including Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Bhagat Singh Memorial at Khatkar Kalan in Nawanshahr and Virasat-e-Khalsa in Anandpur Sahib.

Disposing of the petition, the Bench did not express any opinion on the merits of the matter, but directed the respondent-state to decide the representations by passing a speaking order in accordance with the law.
