Digital library opens doors to modern learning, innovation
The Digital Library in Hoshiarpur stands as a shining example of modern learning in the state, offering a well-equipped and peaceful study space for students in need.
Launched by the district administration in 2023, the library was designed to provide a conducive environment for students who lacked proper study spaces at home. In just two years, the library has become a key resource for local youth, attracting 912 members and drawing around 150 visitors daily.
With a collection of over 1,000 hard-copy books, six daily newspapers, eight weekly publications, competitive exam journals and the ability to order new books every month, the library has become an essential hub for learning. Additionally, it currently supports 11 students preparing for the civil services examination, offering them guidance and resources to aid their preparation.
Inaugurated on March 4, 2023, by local AAP MLA and former minister Brahm Shankar Jimpa, along with former DC Komal Mittal, the library’s concept was inspired by similar libraries in Bengaluru. Former MLA and Congress minister Sunder Sham Arora played a pivotal role in securing a Rs 3 crore grant for the initiative, laying the foundation for its success.
Under the guidance of the current Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain and with the assistance of the Red Cross, the library has flourished into a self-sustaining model, relying solely on its own revenue to operate. Located in the Civil Lines neighborhood, the library offers an array of facilities, including a reception desk, a serene reading room, a conference room for expert lectures and a tea and snack area. It also features a fully equipped computer lab with 30 workstations, headphones and Wi-Fi coverage, along with access to a wealth of e-books and digital resources. Librarian Vijay Kumar has become well-known for his dedication to running the library efficiently and motivating students to make the most of the resources available. The library offers a highly affordable membership fee of just Rs 500 per month, with discounts for longer memberships, making it accessible to a wide range of users. Membership also includes digital entry via smartcards and the convenience of online book issuance and returns through the e-granthalay software.
Mangesh Sood, Red Cross Secretary of Hoshiarpur, shared that the library also offers coaching for UPSC and various other competitive exams, such as NEET, UGC-NET and government job tests. Peer groups for UPSC/PCS exam preparation are also available. “The Hoshiarpur Digital Library is not just a study area; it’s a beacon of progress, commitment and hope for the youth of Punjab,” said Sood. “It serves as a model for other districts to replicate in creating modern and inclusive educational spaces. Due to its popularity, the district administration is planning to expand the library to accommodate even more learners.”
