A 25-year-old farmer from Aahli Kalan village in Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala, allegedly attempted suicide after floods destroyed his paddy crop spread over 16 acres. Arshdeep is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
As per the information, the farmer, Arshdeep Singh, had been under severe stress following the complete loss of his crop due to recent flooding in the region. His family owns 10 acres of land and had cultivated an additional 6 acres on contract.
His mother, Ranjit Kaur said that Arshdeep had been visibly disturbed since the damage. “He had stopped eating and wasn’t speaking to anyone,” she told The Tribune. “I asked some relatives to talk to him. He confided in them that he was worried about how we would repay the loan we had taken.”
She added with grief, “We kept telling him that many farmers have suffered the same fate and that things would get better. But, oh... dil te lai gaye (he took it to heart).”
An active farmer from the village Saminder Singh said that the family had suffered the same fate in 2023 as well. "But, this time the farmer couldn't take it. But, he is stated out of danger," he said.
