Disability no deterrent for this city girl

City girl Malika Handa added another feather to her cap by winning a bronze medal in the 25th National Chess Championship held in Mysuru from January 5 to 9.

Malika, known for her exceptional performance in chess, earlier claimed the top spot in the India Blitz Chess Championship for the Deaf - 2024 held in Bihar. She also represented India in the Winter Deaf Olympics in Turkey, where she secured sixth position.

Despite her accomplishments, Malika’s journey has been fraught with challenges. Her mother, Renu Handa, lamented the lack of support from the state government, noting that she achieved the success through her sheer determination and skills.

“She is the first Indian girl to win a gold in the International Deaf and Dumb Chess Championship and an eight-time gold medallist in the National Chess Championship for the Deaf,” Renu said.

“With 90 per cent hearing disability, Malika’s achievements speak volumes about her perseverance. We are disappointment with the government for neglecting her accomplishments,” she said.

She demanded more recognition and financial support for differently-abled athletes like Malika, who consistently bring pride to the state on international platforms.
