Do-gooder cop: Alone and infirm, 85-year-old admitted to hospital by DSP
Kartapur DSP Surinder Pal Singh Dhogri stepped up to extend help to an aged and infirm 85-year-old, who had been left confined to bed due to a severe infection in his left foot. After coming to know of the plight of the elderly man, the DSP, along with some aides, admitted him to a local private hospital — where he is currently undergoing treatment.
A video of this help extended by the cop also went viral on social media.
The 85-year-old man identified as Grman Singh Gama, resident of Bare Pind in Karatarpur, had been relegated to his house with no one to look after him. A severe infection in his left leg, left him unable to sit up or walk. As per information, his son had died some years ago after which no one else was left in his family to take care of him. Due to damage to his feet — following the infection — all five fingers of his left foot also had to be chopped off.
The DSP said, "Some do-gooders and social activists had told me about the man’s plight, after which we undertook to admit him to the hospital until he was nursed to care. As per our information, he had a severe infection in his foot and had no earnings, nor an earning member at home, and no one to take care of him. He didn't even have money to buy food. On top of poverty, his health condition rendered him immobile. I asked some of my friends to bring him to me from where we would take him. But on a duty visit, I met him on the road itself and we admitted him immediately to a private hospital in Jalandhar."
The DSP, along with his friends, has undertaken to bear all costs of the ongoing treatment. The DSP said, "It is our duty to help people. One day I too will retire. It is imperative that help is extended to elderly who languish without aid in the twilight of their lives. This is the least we could do. My friends are also extending a lot of help. Doctors have said that the man would need treatment for about 10 more days until he is healthy again."
