DPRO cautions against rumours on social media
The district authorities have issued a stern warning against the circulation of false information on social media following reports of misleading posts regarding blackouts during civil defence drills.
In an official statement, District Public Relations Officer (DPRO) Subegh Singh, on behalf of Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala, Amit Kumar Panchal, confirmed that a specific Instagram page had been found spreading unverified claims, which could potentially incite public fear and unrest.
“The circulation of baseless rumours, particularly in sensitive situations, is highly irresponsible and can lead to panic among citizens,” said DPRO Subegh Singh. “The details of the Instagram handle involved in spreading this misinformation have been forwarded to the cyber cell of Kapurthala police for immediate and stringent action.”
The DPRO urged residents and online users to verify information before sharing it on public platforms. He emphasised that those found guilty of rumour-mongering—whether individuals, groups or institutions—will face serious legal consequences under relevant laws.
“We appeal to the public to act responsibly on social media. Spreading false information not only violates the law but also threatens peace and public order,” Singh added.
The district authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintain calm and ensure that civil preparedness activities continue smoothly without interference or fear, said DPRO Subegh Singh. —
