The announcement was confirmed by Amrik Singh Powar, general secretary of Hockey Punjab, who stated that Dr Rai was unanimously chosen for the role in recognition of her long-standing association with the sport and her family’s notable contributions to Indian hockey.

Dr Rai is the wife of the late Olympian Jagdev Singh Rai, hailing from Khusropur village — a family widely respected for its hockey legacy. “In recognition of her personal commitment and her family’s immense contribution to the sport, the executive body felt she was the right choice for this leadership role,” Powar said.

The hockey fraternity welcomed her appointment with enthusiasm. Olympian Sanjeev Kumar, Hockey Punjab members Kulbir Singh and Gundeep Singh Kapoor, along with other prominent figures, extended their congratulations.
