Drug addict dies in police custody in Kapurthala

Following recovery of 6 grams of heroin and 25 capsules of drugs, a criminal case under the NDPS Act was registered against him

One accused died under mysterious circumstances in police custody at Sadar police station, Kapurthala, in the morning, according to police.

City Deputy Superintendent of Police Deep Karan Singh confirmed the death of the accused in police remand. He told media persons that the accused — identified as Vinod Kumar (20), resident of Saido Bhulana — was arrested by police on March 30, following recovery of 6 grams of heroin and 25 capsules of drugs. The police registered a criminal case under the NDPS Act and he was produced him in a local court and the judge gave a police remand of two days.

The DSP said the arrested accused’s condition deteriorated at 3:30 am and he was immediately rushed to the local civil hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The doctors today conducted the post-mortem under the supervision of Judicial Magistrate Ist Class Bhawna Bharti.

The police have started investigation to ascertain the cause of death. The deceased’s body was handed over to his parents for cremation.
