The Jalandhar Rural Police have arrested two for drug smuggling and recovered 3 kg of opium, busting a drug racket being operated from within jail.
The arrests have been made as part of a special campaign launched to crack down on drug traffickers in the region.
The accused have been identified as Amandeep Singhof Shati Nagar, Bajwara Kalan, police station Sadar, Hoshiarpur, and Mandeep Singh, resident of Leela Megh Singh, police station Sidhwa Bet, Ludhiana.
Speaking to mediapersons, SSP Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said during a routine patrolling near Dussehra Ground Chowk, Alawalpur, the police team intercepted two suspicious individuals riding on a scooter (PB-07-CA-3297). On being signalled to stop, the driver attempted to flee, abandoning a bag. The police swiftly apprehended both individuals and upon searching the bags, discovered 3 kg of opium packed in separate envelops.
An FIR under Sections 21/61/85, NDPS Act, has been registered against the Individuals. The kingpin, who is operating from the jail, has also been named in the case.
The accused, during preliminary interrogation, revealed that the opium business was being orchestrated by ringleaders from inside the jail. Further investigation will focus on their digital footprints to establish forward and backward links in the drug network.
The SSP said the operation was conducted by Inspector Ravinderpal Singh, SHO of Adampur Police Station, under the supervision of DSP Sumit Sood.
He said the accused would be produced in the local court and their police remand would be sought to further investigate their connections and uncover additional links in the drug supply chain.
