Drug smuggler dies in encounter with Shahkot police

A drug smuggler has died in an encounter with the Shahkot police in Jalandhar.

Gurpreet alias Gopi, a resident of Kutbewal village, was injured in the encounter on Sunday and succumbed to his injuries later.

The encounter took place during the Jalandhar rural police's chase to nab three smugglers who were carrying heroin.

SSP Rural Harvinder Virk said, "The CIA staff of the Jalandhar rural police, acting on a tip-off that certain gangsters were active in Lohian area of Shahkot, intercepted the three smugglers at Kutbewal village."

The SSP said the trio was involved in snatchings and other cases in the past.

He said that in the cross-firing, Gopi was injured while the two others were arrested.

The police seized 100 gm heroin and weapons from them.

Virk said the police intercepted smugglers Rohit, Lovepreet and Gopi at Kutbewal village while they were riding a bike.

He said when the police were apprehending them, Gopi fired at ASI Mandeep Singh; in the retaliatory firing, Gopi was injured and taken to civil hospital, Lohian; he later succumbed to his injuries.

The SSP said the police had seized 100 gm heroin, a .30 bore pistol, three live rounds and a motorcycle from them.
