A drug smuggler was injured as police retaliated after he, along with his accomplice, fired at a police party near Khiranwali village in Kapurthala district on Thursday night.

The police party had a narrow escape.

The police have arrested both drug smugglers. An FIR has been registered at Fattu Dhinga police station.

The two smugglers from Amritsar had come in a car to supply drugs near the village. Following a tip-off, a naka was laid and when the car was signalled to stop, they opened fire on the police.

The police eventually nabbed the two.

Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Tura said a .30 bore pistol, a magazine and a consignment of heroin were seized from the two. The police also impounded the car.

As many as 14 cases are already registered against one of the smugglers.
