Kapoor; her mother Shobha Kapoor; four other persons involved in the production of television show ‘Pavitra Rishta’ (Meghna Amal, Sameer Kulkarni, Bhavna Thakkar, and an actor); and the owner of television channel Zee TV had been booked by the Nakodar police under Section 295 (A) of the IPC for “hurting religious sentiments of the Valmiki community”.

The case was lodged after Rauni Gill, president of Bhartiya Valmiki Sarav Dharam Samaj, reached out to the police alleging that during an episode of the show — which aired on August 5, 2013 — derogatory and objectionable references towards Maharishi Valmiki were made, hurting the religious sentiments of the community.

The case was registered on August 16, 2013, and the petition was filed by Kapoor in 2014.
