Elderly couple killed, 9 hurt as two cars collide head-on near Phagwara

A tragic road accident on the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur highway near Dhande Mor claimed the lives of an elderly couple and left more than half-a-dozen people injured on Thursday night.

According to SHO Sadar Dilbag Singh, the deceased were identified as Mukhtiar Singh (70) and his wife, Dharam Kaur, both residents of Jagjitpur village near Phagwara. The accident occurred when Mukhtiar Singh was returning home from a wedding ceremony in his car (bearing registration number Punjab-36-J-5243). As he approached Dhande-turn, a Swift car (bearing registration number Punjab-08-CF-4100) coming from the Phagwara side collided head-on with his vehicle. The impact of collision was so severe that Mukhtiar Singh and his wife died on the spot.

Nine other individuals, who sustained injuries in the accident, were rushed to the Civil Hospital for medical treatment. Among the injured were Sukhwinder Singh, son of Mukhtiar Singh, Naina Devi, daughter of Sukhwinder Singh, Avleen Kaur, daughter of Sukhwinder Singh, Samarveer, son of Sukhwinder Singh, and Gurlaj Kaur, daughter of Sukhwinder Singh.

Mohan Lal, Binder, Mamta and Barkha occupants of the Swift car who were injured in the accident. The condition of all injured were stated to be stable.

SHO Dilbag Singh said preliminary investigation suggested that the accident happened because rain had turned the road slippery. The bodies of the deceased were sent for a post-mortem examination, which would be conducted tomorrow, he said. So far, no formal statements had been recorded from either party involved in the accident, he added. — OC
