An elderly man riding a scooter lost his life in a road accident near Adampur on Monday, again highlighting the growing concerns over road safety and the increasing number of hit-and-run incidents in the region.

The victim, identified as Tarsem Singh, a resident of Sainik Vihar in Rama Mandi, was returning home after completing some personal work in Adampur when the accident occurred. According to the police, the incident took place near Sagar Hotel in Adampur, where a speeding truck rammed into Tarsem Singh’s two-wheeler. The impact threw him under the rear wheels of the truck, leading to his death on the spot.

Witnesses said the truck driver did not stop to help and immediately fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle a short distance away.

Locals said the Adampur police arrived at the site and took custody of the body. The remains were later sent to the Civil Hospital in Jalandhar for a post-mortem examination.

Family members confirmed that Tarsem Singh had gone out alone for routine personal work and nearly completed his return journey when the tragedy struck.

The police have registered a case and taken the truck into custody. A search is underway to trace the driver, who remains absconding. Officials stated that they are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and questioning locals to determine what led to the accident.

The fatal incident, meanwhile, has again raised questions over road safety in and around Jalandhar, particularly in semi-urban stretches like Adampur, where heavy vehicles often pass through narrow roads at high speeds.

Locals say that the lack of proper signage, poor enforcement of traffic rules and insufficient police patrolling contribute to the frequency of such deadly mishaps.

"This isn’t the first time we’ve seen such an incident here. Despite repeated requests, no speed breakers or warning signs have been installed, even though it’s a busy road with both commercial and civilian traffic," said a shopkeeper near the accident site.
