Jalandhar, January 1
Under the Tandarust Punjab Mission, students and teachers will plant saplings on the premises of government schools.
In a circular, district education officers and principals have been asked to encourage students to plant more and more trees. The objective of the guidelines is to make the state green.
The circular also states that staff and students should be encouraged by planting a sapling on their birthdays.
Besides, the students will be encouraged to plant trees around the playground. “Maha Utsav Din should also be celebrated at schools,” the circular read.
Around six months ago, in order to rescue depleting groundwater and increase the minuscule forest cover of the state, the Punjab Forest Department and Eco Sikh organisation had adopted the Miyawaki method, popularised by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. Under it, saplings of 64 rare species are being planted on a war footing to revive the forest cover in the state.— TNS
