Encroachments on space meant for pedestrians by vendors and shopkeepers had become a routine in Phagwara, Nurmahal, Nakodar and Phillaur towns as the Local Bodies Department has failed to act against the violators.

Berms of the various roads have been encroached upon. Sweatshop owners and vegetable and fruit sellers have encroached upon the space meant for pedestrians in congested bazars even.

Shopkeepers display their wares in front of their shops, leaving little space for people to walk. In Phagwara, shop-cum-booth owners have extended their establishment after covering verandas which were constructed only to facilitate the pedestrains. It has been observed that several shop-cum-office owners have constructed basements even after covering verandas which is the property of Local Bodies Department.

Locals say the failure of the Phagwara MC and nagar councils of the other towns to initiate action for the removal of encroachments on the important roads is encouraging other shopkeepers to encroach upon the roads.
