'Ethics Bowl' contest held

Jalandhar: Army Public School on Tuesday hosted the semifinal matches of the ‘Ethics Bowl’ competition. Witnessing a remarkable performance of the four teams, which had been selected at the quarterfinals, the participants went a notch further in exhibiting their skills of research, planning and presentation. Each team consisted of four participants and two reserves. The participants gave thought-provoking perspectives in their responses to the ethical questions put to them. The teams, which participated at this stage, were comprised of participants from six Army Public Schools of the 11 Corps Zone. The results were tabulated and a total of 12 participants were selected, six in each team, for the final duel.

Basics of Computers taught

Kanya Maha Vidyalaya organised a bridge course during the summer vacations to teach the basics of computer to students. The bridge course was organised by PG Department of Computer Science & Applications. Students from different streams participated in this bridge course with enthusiasm. During the course, the students were provided hands-on training to operate spreadsheet, presentation and word processing software and were also acquainted with the basics of programming and upcoming technologies. Students were taught the complete knowledge of motherboard chipset as well. Principal Prof Atima Sharma Dwivedi said the course would help students in bridging the knowledge gap of students related to computer technologies. The Principal lauded the efforts of Suman Khurana, Head, PG Department of Computer Science and Applications, for organising the course.

Message against plastic bags

On the occasion of World Paper Bag Day, DIPS students gave the message of not using plastic envelopes to save the environment, rather adopting paper bags. A creative bag-making activity was organised at DIPS School, Uggi. The children of the pre-wing and primary sections together made bags with the help of newspapers, old paper and cloth. By making bags together, they gave the message of making the environment free from single-use plastic. Through posters, poetry and Power Point presentations, the children said plastic bags were harmful to both earth and environment. These were polluting the environment. The children along with the teachers gave paper bags to shopkeepers in their nearby areas and encouraged them to use them. Teachers told the children that plastic does not burn easily nor does it melt quickly. When burnt, it releases a very dangerous gas, which is harmful to both our health and the environment. Besides, throwing it in the open can lead to the death of animals living on the road. Principal Deepak Rana said the purpose of celebrating Paper Bag Day is to make people aware that they should make a less use of plastic envelopes. MD Tarwinder Singh said the plastic used in daily use was recycled rarely, so cloth, jute bags should be used. He told them to always take a bag with themselves whenever they went to marketplaces.

Theme-based excursion

Ivy World School, under the aegis of the Vasal Educational Society, organised McDonalds Theme Excursion. It was a theme-based excursion to help Ivyians better comprehend the realities of a diverse society.

There were many scheduled events, including demonstrations of how to handle order taking, burger preparation, receiving payment, paying bills, etc. These excursions are carefully arranged to boost a child’s intellectual zeal and enjoyment. These excursions also give the facilitators and students a chance to develop a healthy bond. Principal S Chauhan congratulated and appreciated all children, parents for their enormous support. Director Aditi Vasal said the school always encouraged Ivyians for such educational excursions for their development.

Workshop on beauty and skin care

A three-week skill enhancement course, titled “Beauty and Skin Care Solutions”, was held for the students of Class XII of Apeejay College of Fine Arts. Students learnt how to take care of their skin to enhance beauty. While discussing the utility and significance of the workshop, Principal Dr Neerja Dhingra said, “In today’s time, everyone wants a good skin and wishes to look good.” During the workshop, students learnt about skin and its structure, its analysis and upkeep routine.

Students, under the guidance of Meenal Sandhu, learnt various makeup tools, products and techniques by using them through practical demonstration. Another aspect which was taught was hair care, its problems and methods to overcome it. Students also acquired training in different types of hairstyles. Students learned many new skills through this workshop organised by the Fashion and Makeover Department.

Biotechnology skill course

The department of biotechnology conducted a value-added skill development course, titled ‘Biotechnology: Science 2 Solutions for 10+2 students of various schools’. Principal Dr Pardeep Bhandari said through this course, students were given hands-on practical training to find out solutions to various science riddles and problems through biotechnology. Dr Bhandari said from the current session, the college had started the diploma in medical laboratory technology course to give an impetus to employability to science students. Dr Rajiv Khosla, head, delivered course introduction to the participants followed by lab orientation (microbiology, molecular biology and biochemistry research lab). Participants were familiarised with the background of the DNA and were given a practical demonstration to isolate human genomic DNA from peripheral blood. They were taught about the extraction process and got themselves clicked with their DNA. They were familiarised with the DNA purification process. Dr Poonam Bhagat introduced the students to the hidden world of microorganisms present in different medium, viz soil, pond water, human hair, hands, mobile cover, etc.

Student shines in swimming event

Phagwara: Bassi Educational Society-run Cambridge International School, Phagwara, had a proud moment when Naysha of Class XI (D) won three silver and four bronze medals in the district and state-level swimming competitions. The event was organized at Police DAV School, Jalandhar. Two hundred swimmers from all over Punjab School participated in the competition wherein Naysha took part in the 200-m backstroke, 100-m backstroke and 100-m freestyle events. She won three silver medals. She also participated in 50-m backstroke and 50-m freestyle events in which she won bronze medals. After a robust performance, she was chosen for the Inter State Swimming Competition in which she showed her calibre in the 4×100-m freestyle and 4×200-m freestyle relay events. She won bronze medals in both events. The principal of the school, Jorawar Singh, appreciated Naysha for her performance. Chairperson Jasbir Kaur Bassi also congratulated her. /OC
