Farmer’s son wins gold in karate, qualifies for state-level championship

Harmandeep Singh, an 11-year-old student from Government Primary School, Rurka Kalan, has brought laurels to his school and village by winning a gold medal in karate at the district-level school games. With this victory, he has now qualified for the upcoming state-level championship.

The young athlete, son of a marginal farmer, has been practising karate for the past three years. His mother Harpreet Kaur expressed pride in her son’s achievement. “Harman loves playing and practises every day. He often tells me that when he wins a cash prize, he will buy me a new suit or slippers,” she said with a smile. She added that she hopes her son continues to excel in sports and achieve great success.

“He really wants to achieve great heights in sports and often tells me that he would do anything to achieve success,” the mother said.

Buta Ram, the head teacher of the school, recognised Harmandeep’s potential early on and took special steps to nurture his talent. “We wanted our students to be truly prepared, not just participate for formality’s sake,” he said. “Since karate is a technical sport, I arranged for a private coach to train our students. Harmandeep has been working very hard and is getting ready for the state-level competition.”

According to Buta Ram, 38 students from the school took part in various events at the district-level games. Some girls also won silver medals, while Harmandeep clinched gold. To celebrate their achievements, the school organised a small party for all participants, including those who did not secure a position, to encourage them for future competitions.

Harmandeep’s dedication and his school’s support stand as a shining example of how talent, when nurtured with care and effort, can overcome all odds.
