Jalandhar, January 25

Fed up with the municipal corporation (MC) for not resolving their long-pending issues, residents living nearby Model Town dump have decided to clean the ‘mess’ themselves.

Residents of several colonies adjoining Model Town under the banner of the joint action committee have been raising the long-pending issue of shifting the garbage dump from their area. Residents said they had been requesting officials concerned to resolve the issue for years’ altogether, but to no avail.

A meeting of the committee was held in which chairman Varinder Malik announced that on Republic Day, residents would start cleaning the dump around 12.30 pm.

Committee president Jaswinder Singh said recently, a new road was constructed. “Now, waste is being thrown on the road. We shared the problem with officials of the MC numerous times, but they just don’t act. This is why we decided to clean the road,” he said.

Jaswinder said, “As per an agreement reached between residents and the MC, waste from two wards had to be disposed of at this site. This continued for some time. Now, things are back to square one. It seems that the waste from the entire city is being dumped here.”
