Jalandhar, February 10

Environmentalist and Rajya Sabha member Balbir Singh Seechewal, raising the issue of global warming in the House, urged the Union Government to save the agriculture community which is facing the brunt of climate change.

Seechewal referencing a recent report said that 310 districts of the country had been affected by climate change. Which included nine districts of Punjab. Jalandhar, Moga, Faridkot, Bathinda and Gurdaspur districts have had to bear the dangers of climate change. Similarly, he said, 11 districts of Haryana and eight of Himachal have also been affected by climate change.

He said concerns over global warming were raised at the climate change summits held in Copenhagen in 2009 and subsequently in Paris in 2016. In the Paris summit, India had agreed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20 per cent. He said that it had been almost 14 years but the government has not taken any concrete steps to tackle the problem yet.
