A newly married woman from Rahon, Nawanshahr, has filed a police complaint against her huasban and in-laws (mother-in-law and sister-in-law) for allegedly harassing her.

The woman got married three months ago and her husband Gurpreet lives in Italy. The complainant after two months into her marriage had raised the same issue with the police. But both the parties decided to sort out the differences and an agreement was reached between them at that time. However, as per the complainant, nothing changed.

In a fresh statement to the police, the woman stated that the moment she went back to her in-laws after the ‘raazinama’, they again allegedly started torturing her mentally. The woman has also alleged they would often lock her inside the room whenever they would move out.

The police said a month after the marriage the complainant had an argument with her husband regarding the registration of their marriage. Gurpreet allegedly went back to Italy without informing her wife and never contacted her thereafter. He did not even send her any money.

“Last month, my brother came to give me some medicines, and my in-laws accused him of beating them and lied to everyone,” the complaint by the victim reads. However, after checking CCTV footage and listening to various audio calls, the police denied the claims made by the victim’s in-laws that her brother had beaten them up.

She further added that her husband never called her because her mother-in-law would portray her negatively in front of him. “My family is in distress and I should be given justice,” the woman said. A case under Section 498-A of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the victim’s husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
