Health teams observe ‘dry day’ in Nawanshahr

In an ongoing effort to curb the spread of dengue and malaria, health teams in Nawanshahr observed Friday as a “dry day,” destroying mosquito larvae and raising awareness among local residents.

Under the guidance of Civil Surgeon Dr Gurinderjit Singh, the Mass Media Wing led a public health initiative across Vikas Road and Rahon Road. The campaign also included Deputy District Education and Information Officer Tarsem Lal.

During the drive, residents were educated on dengue prevention, and health leaflets were distributed. Teams located and eliminated mosquito breeding sites by destroying standing water where larvae were found.

Tarsem Lal emphasised the risks posed by stagnant water, stating, “Where there’s standing water, there’s breeding ground for malaria and dengue mosquitoes.” He also highlighted key dengue symptoms such as high fever, headaches, joint pain, skin rashes, pain behind the eyes, and bleeding from gums or nose.

He advised residents to prevent water accumulation around their homes, clean coolers and plant pot trays weekly, wear full-sleeved clothing to avoid mosquito bites, and use mosquito nets or repellents while sleeping.

Health Inspector Joginder Pal urged people to cover their arms and legs during these times.
