The seed kit for the cultivation of winter vegetables was released by the Horticulture Department today by Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal. The kit includes seeds of nine types of winter vegetables like peas, spinach, coriander, fenugreek, radish, carrot, turnip, broccoli and Chinese mustard. By cultivating one kit in an area of 3 marla, the vegetable requirement of five members of a family can be met.
Around 2,000 kits will be distributed in district Kapurthala by the Horticulture Department to encourage home gardens among the people. Calling upon people to grow vegetables for their families, the Deputy Commissioner said that vegetables are an important part of one’s diet and a source of many types of vitamins, proteins, minerals, fibres and other nutrients that keep our body healthy.
The DC said that people can get these vegetable seed kits from Horticulture Department offices for Rs 80.
Gurjit Singh Ball, Deputy Director, Horticulture Department, said that by doing this, not only fresh and poison-free vegetables can be obtained but also the cost of purchasing them will be reduced.
Manpreet Kaur, Horticulture Development Officer-cum-Nodal Officer, Home Garden, was also present on the occasion.
