Once an ordinary government school with limited facilities, the Government Elementary School, Sham Chaurasi in Hoshiarpur district has now become a model institution admired across the region. With improved infrastructure, discipline and academic quality, the school now stands shoulder to shoulder with reputed private institutions.
The driving force behind this transformation is centre head teacher Omkar Singh Soos, whose vision, dedication and teamwork have completely changed the image of government education.
Nearly a decade ago, the school was in a struggling state. The building was old and damaged, student enrolment was declining and resources were scarce. When Omkar Singh Soos took charge, he resolved to bring a positive revolution in government schooling. “If a teacher works with honesty and passion, even a government school can become a centre of excellence,” he often says.
He began by connecting teachers, parents and the local community with his mission. Slowly, this collective effort brought visible results — walls were painted, classrooms redecorated, and a friendly, motivating environment was created for students.
Today, the Government Elementary School Sham Chaurasi exemplifies modern and progressive education. The school now features air-conditioned classrooms, a smart class with a projector, a modern library, a dining hall and inverter power backup to ensure uninterrupted learning. Clean drinking water is available to every child, and digital learning tools have been introduced to make students more confident and tech-savvy. These improvements have enhanced the learning experience and rebuilt public trust in government schools.
Currently, the school has around 300 students guided by 11 dedicated and trained teachers. The teaching staff emphasises not only academic excellence but also character development, discipline, creativity and sportsmanship. Under Omkar Singh Soos’ leadership, the school has achieved outstanding results in block and district-level competitions, including science exhibitions, cultural events and sports tournaments.
Omkar believes that children in government schools are equally capable and talented. “They are the future of our society,” he says. “All they need is the right environment and confidence to move ahead.” This belief has been proven true through consistent student achievements, with many now proudly representing the school at various levels.
The Education Department has recognised the institution as a model school for its all-round development and innovative practices. Officers often cite Sham Chaurasi as an example for other government schools to follow. The success of Sham Chaurasi demonstrates that when education is treated as a mission rather than a duty, remarkable results are possible even with limited resources.
The story of Government Elementary School Sham Chaurasi is, therefore, a story of faith restored in government education. The passion of Omkar Singh Soos, the teamwork of his colleagues and the enthusiasm of students have together shown that any government school can become a “model of excellence” with the right vision and sincere effort.
