Jalandhar, February 13
The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate has arrested a person for making an extortion call to city-based industrialist by posing as gangster Landa Harike.
Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said a city-based industrialist, Balkar Singh, had filed a complaint with the police stating that he received a ransom call on February 4. The caller identified himself as dreaded gangster Landa Harike and demanded Rs 2 crore extortion money from him.
Sharma said the caller threatened to harm industrialist and his family in case he failed to fulfil his demand.
The CP said the police registered a case under Sections 386 and 506 of the IPC at the Sadar police station against the suspect and his accomplice.
The suspect had been identified as Makhan Singh, while his accomplice had been identified as Amanjot Singh, both residents of Kaidowal, Mahilpur, Hoshiarpur.
The Police Commissioner said the caller again called the industrialist on February 5 and 6 and sought money from him. The industrialist then informed the police about the incident, following which they started investigations into the matter.
CP Sharma said during investigation, the police traced the role of Amanjot Singh and Makhan Singh behind the calls. While Makhan Singh had been arrested, Amanjot was still absconding. Raids were being conducted to nab him.
