IMA observes World TB Day
The local unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) headed by Dr Tushar Aggarwal observed World Tuberculosis Day with a special event aimed at raising awareness about TB among the people.
The event, held at ESI Hospital, Phagwara, featured an expert talk by Dr Anil Tandon and Dr Poonam Panesar who shared insights on TB prevention, symptoms and treatment. A talk on oral hygiene was delivered by Dr Talwinder. “Tuberculosis is a pressing public health concern that requires collective efforts to combat it. Patients suffering from unexplained ill health for a prolonged period often end up being diagnosed with extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. This form of TB may or may not involve the lungs and can affect any organ in the body,” said Dr Poonam.
Elaborating on its complications, she noted that bones, brain, liver, skin and kidneys can all be afflicted. Additionally, gastrointestinal tuberculosis accounts for a significant portion of extra-pulmonary TB cases, many of which require surgical intervention.
Dr Poonam highlighted severe complications, stating, “Surgical tuberculosis patients often suffer from intestinal obstructions, blood in stool, ulcers in the intestines, abscesses in the liver and pancreatic involvement, which can lead to diabetes. Fluid accumulation in the abdomen, known as ascites, is another common consequence of mesenteric tuberculosis.”
