The Punjab chapter of the Indian Medical Association is up in arms against the alleged violation of various Supreme Court judgments by the police while dealing with complaints against the doctors.

Punjab IMA president Dr Paramjit Maan accompanied by senior IMA members, including Dr SPS Sooch, Dr Rajinder Sharma, Dr Manoj Sobti, Dr Navjot Dahyia and Dr Kulwinder Maan, said though the Supreme Court had pronounced several judgments stating that the police could not arrest doctors until the Board of Medical experts found them guilty, but in Punjab the police had been violating the apex court’s verdict with impunity.

The Punjab IMA has threatened to go on strike from Monday if the apathetic attitude of the police against the medical fraternity continued. The doctors would shut medical services, including emergency, if their genuine grievance would go unheard, said the IMA leaders.

The President said, “Whenever some mishap happens, the police under the pressure of politicians take no time to book and arrest the doctors ignoring the SC guidelines.”

The matter pertains to the arrest of a doctor in Gurdaspur two days ago on the allegations of negligence in handling a surgery case of a government school teacher. Gurdaspur SSP Harjit Singh has now told the Civil Surgeon to constitute a medical board in the case.
