Prisoner Ramandeep Singh Mangumath has been booked by the Kotwali police for speaking to the journalist on the pretext of talking to his advocate. The FIR was lodged based on a complaint by the Kapurthala jail authorities to the Kotwali police.

A prisoner serving his sentence for committing a murder in Phagwara, Mangumath had registered his advocate’s number with the jail and was supposedly conversing with him when jail personnel noticed that he was speaking to the person about the behaviour towards him at the jail. It was then discovered that he was talking to a journalist.

Kotwali SHO Palwinder Singh said: “As per prison bylaws, a prisoner can only talk to his blood relations or advocate. While the prisoner had registered his advocate’s number with the jail, he was actually talking to a journalist. He defrauded jail authorities and violated prison bylaws.”
