Jalandhar, July 9
The Dal Khalsa on Saturday took to streets to protest the PRTC’s order to remove the pictures of extremists Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and Jagtar Singh Hawara from government buses.
Enraged at the order, the Dal Khalsa, SAD (A) and other Sikh groups carrying pictures of Bhindranwale and Bhai Hawara marched towards the bus stand where a heavy contingent of police stopped them from entering the bus stand. Some youths pasted posters on the moving buses that triggered a scuffle between them and police personnel.
After tension escalated, police officials arranged their meeting with GM Gurinder Singh, who assured the protesting members that the issue would be resolved by Tuesday. Dal Khalsa spokesperson Paramjit Singh Mand said they would wait till Wednesday and in case the government and the PRTC failed to take back orders, they would intensify their struggle. Another leader Paramjit Singh Tanda said today’s protest was symbolic in nature and that too only in Jalandhar. He threatened if the government didn’t withdraw the order, they would intensify the protest statewide.
