Jalandhar, August 2
With the traffic police beginning a 20-day awareness drive outside schools regarding harsh punishment for underage drivers and their parents as per the amended Motor Vehicles Act from August 21, the police are grappling with another problem.
The assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs), put on duty outside the schools, said it was not just the minors, who were violating rules by riding scooters and bikes, even their parents and guardians were seen flouting norms by not wearing helmet and not carrying the required documents along.
“If the parents themselves are violating traffic norms, nothing can be said about the youngsters. We do not see things improving even in the next 20 days,” said an ASI posted outside a school in Model Town.
In view of this, the traffic police have started going tough against the offenders by setting up nakas between 1 pm and 3 pm at various locations in the city.
Aditya, ADCP City-2, and Aatish Bhatia, ACP Traffic, got the barricades set up by SHO, Baradari police station, SHO, Division Number 4, and 6 police stations along with traffic and ERS teams at Apeejay College, BSF Chowk and Nakodar Chowk.
A total of 20 e-challans were also issued for violations such as absence of documents, driving without a helmet, triple riding, driving by underage drivers and jumping red lights.
Amandeep Kaur, ADCP-Traffic, also conducted a drive to remove wrongly parked vehicles in the congested areas from PNB Chowk to Jyoti Chowk to make the passage congestion-free.
Vehicle owners were advised not to park their vehicles improperly on road by Inspector Rashminder Singh, in-charge Emergency Response Support team, Jalandhar.
