Jalandhar: NSO to start 79th round of socio-economic survey from July 1

The Jalandhar-based regional office of the National Statistical Office (NSO) of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is conducting the 79th round of socio-economic survey from July 1, 2022, to June 2023.

The 79th round is earmarked for collection of data for compilation of a number of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators along with a survey on AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy).

Other areas of importance will be collection of data on usage of safely managed drinking water, sanitation services, owning of mobile gender wise, population covered by mobile networks, household having computer/Internet, men/women having account in financial institution, proportion of children having birth registration, access to public transport, participation rate of youth and adults in education, hospitalisation expenditure, etc.

In AYUSH, it will be seen that what percentage of the population is aware of AYUSH and AYUSH systems like Ayurvedic, Greek, Sowa-Rigpa, Yoga, Naturopathy and Homeopathy and how much the family has spent on AYUSH treatment, what percentage of the population use AYUSH medicines for pre-natal and post-natal care.

To train the officials for the survey, a three-day Regional Training Camp of National Statistical Office’’s started at Hotel Solitaire Banquets at Barring village in Jalandhar Cantt, which concluded on Saturday. Staff and officers of the National Statistical Office as well as the employees and officers of the Directorate of Economic and Statistics Advisor of the state government are participating in the camp.

Pallavi Agrawal Srivastava, Deputy Director, Regional Office, Jalandhar, had inaugurated the training camp. While welcoming the participants she shared important information about the 79th round of socio-economic survey and directed the participants to conduct the survey to create a robust database.

She said the database would help the Centre and the state government to have accurate and important information for their policy making. The Jalandhar Regional Office is catering to Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot.

According to her, trained personnel of the National Statistical Office and the state government will be surveying 18,020 villages and 13,992 urban areas with 10,24,384 households pan-India. In Punjab, 464 villages and 320 urban areas with 25,088 households will be surveyed.

Agrawal said a practical training session was also be conducted in Rama Mandi, Barring village, Tajpur and Lambra to gain practical knowledge before the start of the final survey from July 1.

A team consisting of Harblas, Assistant Director, and four Senior Statistical Officers — Pooja Joshi, Gaurav Jain, Ashok Kumar and Rakesh Khokhar — gave complete details of the concept, definition, procedure and instructions given by the department regarding the survey so that the participants do not have any doubts about the instructions given by the department during the survey.

The National Statistical Office is the largest data collection department of the Government of India in the country. Surveys by the National Statistical Office provide important information to the Centre and the state government in policy making as well as for researchers to prepare their research papers. Umesh Kumar Limbu, Head of Office, and his team provided important co-operation for organising this Regional Training Conference.
