Jalandhar: Another death has also been reported due to Covid in the past two days, even as eight new cases of Covid were reported from Jalandhar on Saturday. The number of Covid cases in Jalandhar now stands at 78,600. However, 76,936 persons have recovered and only 83 remain active. With the fresh death, the death toll has reached 1,581. Two booked for sexual assault
Phagwara: The Nakodar police have booked two persons on the charge of outraging a woman’s modesty and voluntarily causing hurt. SHO Harjindar Kaur said a resident of Mohalla Guru Nanak Pura complained that accused Atama Ram and Ginda from the same locality assaulted her and also tore her clothes. The SHO said a case under Sections 323 and 354-B, IPC, and Section 8 of the POCSO Act has been registered against them. OC
Man held with 5-gm heroin
Jalandhar: The city police on Saturday arrested a person and recovered 5-gm heroin from his possession. Acting on a tip-off, a police team present near Kapurthala Chowk nabbed Gagan, alias Babla, a resident of Banda Bahadur Nagar, who was allegedly going to deliver heroin to his customer near his residence. A raid was also conducted at his residence and 5-gm heroin was recovered from his possession. A case under Sections 21,61 and 85 of NDPS Act had been registered against Gagan. TNS
842 policemen transferred
Hoshiarpur: SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal, Hoshiarpur, has ordered the transfer of 842 police personnel posted in 15 police stations, 12 police posts, traffic and PCR from their current place of postings to new ones with immediate effect. The move has been initiated to keep the transparency in the working of police and ensure desired level of performance for orderly, efficient and effective law enforcement. TNS
Man booked for assaulting mom
Phagwara: The police have booked a villager on the charge of assault. Investigating officer Iqbal Singh said the accused had been identified as Gurmindar Singh of Shankar village. Mela Singh complained to the police that his son in an inebriated condition attacked his mother Jaswindar Kaur on June 29 and set afire the main gate of the house. A case under Sections 323, 427 and 436 has been registered against the accused who is absconding. OC
Three wanted criminals held
Phagwara: The Goraya police have arrested three criminals wanted in different cases here Friday night. Phillaur DSP Harneel Singh said the arrested accused were identified as Ravi, Prince and Gobind, all residents of Paddi Jagir village near Goraya. The police have recovered a mobile phone, one sharp-edged weapon and a motorcycle from the accused. A case under Sections 379B, 201 and 411 of the IPC has been registered against them. In another case, the Goraya police arrested two women drug peddlers identified as Jagiro and Kamla and recovered 21 gm of heroin and drug money of Rs 40,150 from them.
SBI celebrates Foundation Day
Jalandhar: State Bank of India (SBI) celebrated its foundation day on Friday. On July 1, 1955, the State Bank of India was established by Indianising the Imperial Bank, whose purpose was to provide financial and banking facilities to the people. On the occasion, SBI, Jalandhar, officials visited Pingla Ghar, Jalandhar and distributed fruits, biscuit, juice and other stuff to housemates. Regional manager Anupama Sharma said SBI was associated with every section of society and fulfilled its social responsibilities at all level.
