With rising Covid cases in the country, health authorities in Jalandhar believe there is no cause for alarm in the district so far. Apart from a relative surge witnessed in June, the cases in Jalandhar are only mildly symptomatic.
Five cases of Covid have been reported in June in Jalandhar, two of whom tested positive on Monday. In all, a total of eight cases of Covid have been reported in Jalandhar this year—three in January and five in June. The health department in Jalandhar is, thus, closely monitoring the Covid scenario. Apart from the eight cases reported this year, no death from Covid has been reported so far.
While health authorities stated the cases reported so far in Jalandhar are only mildly symptomatic, the Jalandhar Civil Hospital has also reserved a total of 14 beds for Covid isolation, which include four isolation beds at the trauma centre and 10 isolation beds with ventilators at the medical ICU.
Notably, since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, over 81,000 cases were reported in Jalandhar. From March 2020 until now, 81,795 Covid cases have been reported in Jalandhar. In all, 1,993 deaths from Covid have been reported during the same period. In 2024, 83 people tested positive for Covid and three died after contracting the virus. The last death from Covid was reported on February 24, 2024. The last two cases of Coronavirus this year were reported on June 16, 2025.
Health advisory
Amidst the state-wide surge in cases, the state health department has also recently issued a public advisory for Covid, under which do’s and don’ts were mandated for the population—especially the elderly and the immunocompromised.
The advisory stated, “Due to a slight rise in Covid-19 cases in some parts of the country, a precautionary advisory is being issued. Though the situation in the state of Punjab is under control and the health system is fully prepared, still citizens are advised to follow basic safety measures to prevent the spread of infection.”
The do’s issued for people and healthcare professionals included: “Elderly, pregnant women, immunocompromised and people with health issues should wear a mask in crowded or closed spaces. Healthcare staff should wear masks and follow COVID-appropriate behaviour. Cover mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing using a handkerchief/tissue/fold of elbow. If you feel sick (fever, cough, breathing trouble), wear a mask and visit a doctor.”
The don’ts included: “Avoid crowded or poorly ventilated places, especially if you have health problems. Don’t touch your face without washing hands. Don’t spit in public. Avoid self-medication for respiratory symptoms.”
Official speak
Civil Surgeon Jalandhar, Dr Gurmeet Lal said, “We have very few cases in Jalandhar so far and presently there is no cause for alarm in the Covid scenario as all the cases are mild and no severity of symptoms has been observed in any of the Covid cases in Jalandhar this year so far. Yet, the Jalandhar Civil Hospital is well equipped to tackle exigencies.”
District Epidemiologist Dr Shobhna said, “This year’s Covid cases don’t include any immunocompromised patients, or those with severe symptoms or even those who may require hospitalisation.” Dr Shobhna added, “In view of the scenario, we continue with routine Covid testing, wherein 10 to 15 samples are being tested for Covid per day.”
