Kapurthala resident held with 1-kg opium

The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police busted a drug racket by arresting a person with 1 kg of opium. Giving details, Swapan Sharma, Commissioner of Police (CP), said in a drive against scourge of drug, the police had enhanced vigil in the city. He said as a part of the drive, a special campaign was initiated near Baba Budha Ji Nagar, Nehar Pulli, Basti Bawa Khel, Jalandhar. Sharma said based on a tip-off, the police stopped a Honda Activa scooter bearing registration No. PB-39-LO-2321 during checking of vehicles.
The CP said during checking, the police recovered 1 kg of opium from the scooter rider. He said the police arrested the rider, identified as Gurnam Singh, a resident of Badshahpur village, Kapurthala.
Sharma said an FIR under Section 18 of the NDPS Act had been registered against the suspect at the Basti Bawa Khel police station. The CP said two FIRs under the NDPS Act and the Excise Act were already registered against the suspect in Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala, respectively.
He said further investigation was under progress. He said details of the case would be shared later. Sharma reiterated the commitment of the Commissionerate Police to make Jalandhar a drug-free city.
