To promote the Punjabi language in public spaces, a meeting was held under District Language Officer Jaspreet Kaur at Guru Nanak District Library, Kapurthala, on Wednesday. The meeting reviewed the implementation of government directives requiring all public and private establishments to display signboards primarily in Punjabi (Gurmukhi script).

As per the Punjab Government’s order, Punjabi must appear on the upper portion of every signboard, with other languages allowed only below it.

Addressing the gathering, Kaur said, “Preserving and promoting Punjabi is vital to maintaining our cultural and linguistic heritage. This initiative reinforces our identity and pride in the language.”

Vyapar Mandal representative Kanwar Iqbal Singh assured full cooperation, pledging that all traders would update their signboards within two months. Copies of official guidelines and sample formats were distributed.

Kaur added that while many shopkeepers have already adopted Punjabi signage, some boards still feature other languages or contain spelling errors. She urged traders to rectify these promptly.

She also assured business owners of her department’s full support in ensuring linguistic accuracy and said promoting Punjabi was a shared responsibility toward preserving Punjab’s cultural richness.
