Kargil heroes remembered on Vijay Diwas in Jalandhar Cantt

To mark the 23rd anniversary of the Kargil War, Major General KV Jauhar, General Officer Commanding, and all ranks of the Vajra Corps paid tribute to the Kargil martyrs at a solemn wreath-laying ceremony held at the Vajra Shaurya Sthal in Jalandhar Cantonment on Tuesday.

Commemorating India’s victory over Pakistan

On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of ‘Operation Vijay’, declaring victory after a nearly three-month-long battle on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh. The day is observed as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the war. The Army overcame hostile terrain, and weather and determined enemy occupying dominating heights, to win the war.

During the ceremony, homage was paid to the bravehearts who laid down their lives during Operation Vijay. The event was attended by senior officers and serving personnel. Similar functions to honour the martyrs were held in all stations under the Vajra Corps.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on July 26 every year to commemorate Operation Vijay wherein brave soldiers of the Army overcame near insurmountable odds, hostile terrain, weather and a determined enemy occupying dominating heights, to win the Kargil War.

A pledge was taken by all attendees on the occasion to rededicate themselves to uphold the highest traditions of the Army and honour of the Tricolour.

A function was also organised by the Kashyap Naujawan Bharat Sabha in which families of the martyrs were invited and honoured by sabha chief Pawan Kumar. A documentary on Kargil War was also shown to the attendees. Deputy Commissioner Jaspreet Singh, Commissioner of Police Gursharan Singh Sandhu, former Deputy Director Sainik Welfare Lieut Col Manmohan Singh and Congress MLA Bawa Henry attended the event.

Various educational institutes such as Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, PCM SD College for Women, Surranusi DIPS School and Phagwara’s Cambridge International School also organised programmes to mark the day.
