Khalsa College clinches football championship
The victory marks the college’s triumph after a gap of two years
In a momentous achievement, the football team from Babbar Akali Memorial Khalsa College, Garhshankar, has emerged as the Panjab University Chandigarh football champions. The victory marks the college’s triumph after a gap of two years. Under the guidance of coach Hardeep Singh Gill, the team defeated seven competing teams at the Panjab University Inter-College Football Tournament held at Gurusar Sudhar. Two standout players, Kamaldeep and Harjeet, were selected for the prestigious Santosh Trophy camp, a recognition of their stellar performance.
The Khalsa College football team displayed exceptional skills and teamwork throughout the tournament, culminating in their victory in the final. Additionally, 11 players from the college were chosen for the Panjab University team for the upcoming inter-university matches. The selected players include: Sammy, Harjeet, Ravinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Avinash Kumar, Lovepreet Jassi, Gurdeep Singh, Kamaldeep, Harkamal Singh Badiyal, Jaskaran Singh, and Manjeet Singh.
Following their victory, the football team was given a warm welcome at the college by a jubilant crowd of students, staff and dignitaries. Principal Dr Amandeep Hira led the celebrations and personally congratulated the coach and players for their remarkable achievement. The team was also joined by officials from the Olympian Jarnail Singh Memorial Football Tournament Committee, Garhshankar, who extended their congratulations to players.
In his address, Dr Hira praised the football team for their dedication and hard work, noting that this victory was a testament to the commitment of the players and the coaching staff. He also thanked the Olympian Jarnail Singh Football Tournament Committee and Yograj Gambhir for their continued support to the college team.
The tournament’s committee members, including executive president Dr Harvinder Singh Bath, Superintendent of Police (retd) Shivinderjit Singh Bains, general secretary Balveer Singh Bains, treasurer Yograj Gambhir and Harpreet Singh Walia, also congratulated the coach and players, urging them to keep working hard in their academics and sports, aiming for even greater success in the future.
In a special gesture of appreciation, Dr Hira and Prof Kanwar Kulwant Singh presented a cash prize of Rs 5,000 each to members of the champion football team. Additionally, the Olympian Jarnail Singh Football Tournament Committee presented Rs 10,000 cash prize to one of the standout players from the team.
Dr Harvinder Singh Bath shared the excitement of the committee members, including Mukhtiar Singh Happy Heer, panel president, and various NRIs, who expressed their joy at the team’s victory. Dr Bath assured that the committee would continue to support and recognise efforts of talented players in the future.
The event was attended by Prof Lakhwinderjit Kaur, Prof Kanwar Kulwant Singh, Roshanjit Singh Panam, coach Hardeep Singh Gill, and several others.
