Hoshiarpur, December 14

“Kidney transplantation is the backbone of the treatment of chronic kidney failure. Almost 40 per cent of females receiving a kidney transplant are of childbearing age (18-50 years). There are limited reported cases of pregnancy after kidney transplant.”

This was stated by Dr Raka Kaushal, director Nephrology while speaking during a talk on ‘Pregnancy and kidney transplantation’ at Ivy Hospital today.

She said: “Though chronic kidney disease increased infertility in females, transplant provides an opportunity for pregnancy. It is important to plan pregnancy. It is important to plan pregnancy with proper medical advice and take all precautions as advised by the specialist.”

Talking about a 38-yr female patient who had a kidney transplant at Ivy in April 2016 , Dr Raka said her mother had donated kidney to her. The female had good renal functions after transplant.

After two-yr of transplant, she expressed her desire to start her family. She did not have any children as she was diagnosed with kidney failure a few months after her marriage, informed Dr Raka.

“After a complete evaluation, we changed some medicines so that there are no side effects on the fetus. She conceived and was followed closely during her pregnancy.”

She had a normal course and delivered in the ninth month of her pregnancy said Dr Raka adding she delivered a healthy female child of 3-kg weight.
