Kapurthala MC house approves Rs11 crore development plan

In a meeting at the Municipal Corporation committee hall, the Municipal House approved development proposals worth nearly Rs 11 crore. The session, chaired by MLA Rana Gurjit Singh, saw Municipal Commissioner Anupam Kaler, Mayor Kulwant Kaur, and other officials deliberate on civic needs and sanction several key works.

A major portion of the funds-Rs 8.90 crore-will be spent on repairing severely damaged roads and lanes across 30 wards of the city. Alongside road restoration, the House approved a series of 18 additional proposals, which include the recruitment of a fireman-cum-driver in the fire department, the purchase of various tools such as sweepers, sewerage treatment plant machinery, Tata Ace vehicles, and other utility equipment for sanitation and maintenance. The proposals also cover improvements to cremation and community facilities, beautification works at Shalimar Bagh, and upgrades at Chhadabadi.

Out of the total approved amount, around Rs 2.47 crore is earmarked for infrastructure and development-related tasks spread across different sections of the municipality. Officials emphasised that these measures aim to accelerate routine civic improvements and streamline municipal operations.

A significant health and safety initiative was also cleared: the sterilisation of approximately 2,500 stray dogs in response to rising concerns over stray dog incidents in various residential areas. The municipal administration will collaborate with a designated veterinary centre to ensure the programme is carried out effectively, focusing on high-impact zones where complaints have been increasing. During the meeting, MLA Rana Gurjit Singh raised the issue of the unutilised Rs 6 crore fund available for the city's sewerage system. He urged officials to expedite the use of the amount, stressing the need for immediate upgrades in the sewer network. Following discussion, the matter was placed on record, and related proposals were incorporated into the session's agenda.

The meeting also included acknowledgment of long-pending civic grievances and emphasised swift execution of approved works. With the sanction of new tools, machinery and workforce provisions, the municipal body expects to enhance service delivery across the city.
