Kapurthala Zila Parishad Vice-Chairman escapes gun attack in Shahjahanpur

In a security scare in Kapurthala district, Zila Parishad Vice-Chairman Harjinder Singh Jinda narrowly escaped unharmed after unidentified assailants opened fire at him late Saturday night in Shahjahanpur village, falling under the Sultanpur Lodhi Assembly constituency.

According to Jinda, the incident occurred shortly after he stepped out of his house for a walk following dinner. Two masked men arrived on a motorcycle and allegedly fired multiple rounds in his direction without warning. Reacting swiftly, Jinda managed to run for cover, narrowly escaping the gunfire.

Local residents immediately alerted the police, following which a team led by ASP Sultanpur Lodhi Dhirendra Verma, Station House Officer Inspector Sonamdeep Kaur, and Chowki Incharge Sub-Inspector Malkit Singh reached the spot. Police have recovered six empty cartridges from the scene.

Initial investigations suggest that the suspects were captured on a village CCTV camera, giving the police crucial leads to identify the attackers. Speaking to the media, Jinda expressed deep concern over rising incidents of gun violence in Punjab and urged the police to apprehend the culprits at the earliest. “Such attacks are becoming frequent. The administration must act strictly and ensure people’s safety,” he said.

Police officials confirmed that a probe is underway. “Senior officers are personally monitoring the case. The attackers will be arrested soon,” said Sub-Inspector Malkit Singh. Security has been tightened in the area and CCTV footage is being examined to trace the motorcycle and the suspects.

The incident has sparked anxiety among local residents and political workers, who fear deteriorating law and order in the region.
