Jalandhar, February 25

The Jalandhar Commissionerate police have busted an inter-state weapon smuggling network run by gangster Lakhbir Singh Landa. Three members of the network were arrested and 17 weapons and 33 magazines, all purchased by hawala money, seized from them.

At a press conference held here today, Commissioner of Police (CP) Swapan Sharma revealed that the seven-day operation was based on reliable tips. The police set a trap and managed to apprehend Khushal, Gurlal and Parvez. Khushal, a resident of Ferozepur, is facing seven cases under the Arms Act, attempted murder and drug smuggling. Gurlal and Parvez, both from Patti and in their early 20s, are cousins.

He said during the investigation, it was found that the weapons were sourced from Kunal, a youth based in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Gurlal’s brother Sharanjit, currently incarcerated, has ties with US-based gangsters Gurdev Gill and Lakhbir Singh Landa, known for extortion and terrorist activities.

“Landa and Gill were the masterminds, with Kunal facilitating weapon procurement through hawala channels,” CP Sharma said, adding that the police seized 12 .32-bore pistols, five .34-bore star pistols along with 33 magazines and 20 rounds of ammunition.

He further said that these weapons were confiscated from various locations in Tarn Taran and Ferozepur districts.
