Phagwara, July 29
The library of the Municipal Corporation, Phagwara, which once used to be a favourite hangout of residents has lost its charm ever since the civic body was upgraded.
Around four years ago when the civic body was still a committee, the library bustled with youngsters, especially those from the economically weaker section who couldn’t afford to buy books and made a good use of its rich collection. However, once the MC came into being, the library gave way to cabins for the civic body employees, and it was relegated to a corner. The entire collection of books now seems to be missing.
Some MC employees told this correspondent that the library had been non-functional because of the nonpayment of the accruing costs of newspapers and magazines over the years. When contacted, Assistant Commissioner Ashish Kumar said he knew the library was lying non-functional but as he had joined recently, he could not comment on the reasons behind the situation.
