LPU team invents AI-based electricity consumption monitoring application
Phagwara, August 3
Providing a solution to the persistent disputes between homeowners and tenants over energy payments, a team at Lovely Professional University (LPU) has invented an artificial intelligence (AI)-based smart electricity consumption monitoring agent.
LPU professor Arun Malik and his team introduced a customised mobile application that enables real-time tracking of sub-metre consumption. By integrating a middleware server with a cloud server and employing deep-learning algorithms, this invention provides consumers with a comprehensive dashboard showcasing consumption trends and cost analysis in both kilowatt-hours (units) and monetary terms. A patent for this research was granted.
Malik said that with the implementation of this model, an Internet of Things (IoT) device accurately calculates real-time electricity consumption and securely stores the data in a centralised cloud storage system. By offering a user-friendly dashboard through customised mobile applications, this invention ensures transparency.
LPU Chancellor Ashok Kumar Mittal congratulated the team and said that the institution always encourages the staff and students to take up research. This innovative model not only provides consumers with real-time consumption data but also offers insights into cost measurements, prompting a shift in consumer behaviour towards more efficient energy usage. By leveraging AI technology, the system generates intelligent suggestions to optimise electricity consumption such as scheduling heavy-load tasks during peak hours. Moreover, the model assists distribution companies in analysing data to identify and address power distribution problems promptly, ensuring reliable and uninterrupted service.
The implementation of this model offers numerous benefits to electricity consumers, including real-time awareness of electricity consumption, empowering users to save energy and reduce costs, positive changes in consumer behaviour, fostering active participation in energy management, cost savings through efficient energy usage and the prevention of power theft scenarios, enhanced energy control and waste reduction, promoting a sustainable and eco-friendly environment, etc. — OC
