Major civic infra push for Phagwara: Minister
In a major push to civic infrastructure in Phagwara, Punjab Local Bodies Minister Dr Ravjot Singh on Tuesday announced a multi-pronged plan aimed at significantly improving sanitation, waste management, sewerage system and public lighting in the city.
The minister conducted an extensive early morning tour of key areas, directly interacting with residents to assess ground realities and formulate immediate solutions.
In the presence of Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala, Amit Kumar Panchal, Municipal Commissioner Dr Akshita Gupta and SDM Jashanjit Singh, the minister stressed that ensuring 100 per cent sewerage coverage, implementing efficient waste disposal mechanisms and upholding cleanliness standards are top priorities for the government.
He assured citizens that the city will soon witness the implementation of a permanent and sustainable waste collection and disposal system. Taking swift action, he directed officials from the Municipal Corporation, Sewerage Board and Water Supply Department to expedite work on resolving civic challenges without delay.
One of the key decisions taken during the visit was the launch of a door-to-door waste collection service. Dr Ravjot Singh instructed municipal authorities to ensure that waste is picked up from each household and transported only to designated disposal sites, in order to streamline the waste management process and prevent illegal dumping.
While inspecting a waste dump located near Government Senior Secondary School, he ordered officials to find a new, more suitable site to minimise the environmental and health impact on the school’s surroundings.
In Guru Nanak Nagar, the minister took a serious note of complaints from the residents about stagnant water resulting from poor sewerage infrastructure. He instructed the Municipal Commissioner to work closely with the Sewerage Board and present a detailed plan of action within a week to address the issue.
Addressing concerns about inadequate street lighting, Dr Singh announced the installation of 4,000 new LED streetlights across the city. He confirmed that the tendering process had already been completed and that the installation would begin shortly.
