Major drain cleaning drive in Phagwara ahead of monsoon

With the onset of the monsoon, the Municipal Corporation, Phagwara, has stepped up its citywide sanitation and drainage preparedness efforts. Under the leadership of Mayor Rampal Uppal and Municipal Commissioner Dr Akshita Gupta, the corporation today initiated the cleaning of a long-neglected drain near Jain Model School on Hoshiarpur Road — a site that has repeatedly contributed to severe waterlogging during previous rainy seasons.

The neglected condition of the drain had long been a source of distress for local residents, leading to repeated flooding and disruption during heavy rains. Acknowledging the issue, Akshita Gupta stated that the cleaning drive is a crucial step toward ensuring the smooth drainage of rainwater and preventing seasonal flooding. She emphasized that the initiative is the part of a broader monsoon action plan, which includes desilting of sewer lines, clearing of surface drains, cleaning of roads and streets, and improved management at secondary garbage collection points across the city.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Uppal appreciated the swift and focused action taken by the Municipal Corporation, noting that the drain had remained unattended for years and posed a challenge. He reiterated the corporation’s commitment to proactive governance and assured residents that all necessary steps are being taken to address monsoon-related issues well in advance. He added that the drive reflects the administration’s broader vision of sustainable urban management and public welfare.
