Malkiat Singh Ragbotra, a 72-year-old social activist and philanthropist, has spent over four decades dedicating his life to humanitarian causes, communal harmony and environmental sustainability.
A postgraduate in Political Science from Khalsa College, Jalandhar, Ragbotra began his public service journey in 1978 with the Junior Chamber (Jaycees).
He quickly rose through the ranks, organising blood donation camps, distributing sewing machines to underprivileged families and advocating for national integration. His leadership led him to serve as Punjab State President of Jaycees in 1986.
In 1989, Ragbotra joined Rotary Club Central, setting a benchmark with the ambitious goal of completing “one project every week,” spanning areas such as health, education and community development. Over the years, he has held leadership positions in several civic and social organisations, including the Automobile Dealers Association Phagwara, Red Cross Society Phagwara, Punjab AIDS Control Society Phagwara and the Telephone Subscribers Association. He also served as President of the Municipal Council, Phagwara.
Beyond administrative roles, Ragbotra has led by example, donating blood 66 times, inspiring countless others to participate in voluntary blood donation efforts.
He has been a strong advocate for Swachhata Abhiyan (Cleanliness Campaign), promoting clean and green initiatives and as Secretary of the Phagwara Environment Association, spearheaded large-scale tree plantation drives focused on nurturing and sustaining the environment.
As Patron of the Janta Jal Sewa Samiti, Ragbotra has worked tirelessly to improve water supply services in Phagwara. He has also contributed significantly to the Citizens Rights Forum and the Peace Committee, striving for communal harmony in the region.
Colleagues and fellow volunteers praise Ragbotra as a “grassroots leader with a heart for the people,” emphasising his belief that true service lies in consistent action rather than in positions or titles.
Today, Ragbotra remains a guiding force in various civic and charitable organisations. His name is synonymous with service, sacrifice and dedication, illustrating how one individual's commitment can drive meaningful change in communities and inspire future generations.
