Jalandhar: Goraya police arrested a drug peddler wanted in a case registered against him for peddling drugs on January 17 here. The accused was named in a case by Jammu-based two persons, who had been arrested for smuggling 400 kg of poppy husk in January this year. The accused has been identified as Rashid Husssain Thokar, alias Sahil, a resident of Godra, Pulwama (Jammu and Kashmir). On January 17, a case under Sections 15 (C), 27, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act had been registered at the Goraya police station (Jalandhar) against Ashraf Hussain of Baja Chirala village in Doda (Jammu) and Sudam Hussain of Goshti Chirala village in Doda (Jammu). The police said 400 kg of poppy husk in 16 plastic sacks (weighing 25 kg each) had been seized by Jalandhar police from a truck (JK-13-G-1096) being driven by the duo on January 17 this year. TNS
Middle-aged man run over by train
Phagwara: One unidentified middle-aged man was run over by a train near the Phagwara railway station on Wednesday night. GRP in-charge Gurbheij Singh said the victim was crossing the railway lines when the incident happened. The GRP has registered a case and kept the body in the Civil Hospital mortuary for identification after a post-mortem. OC
Woman killed in road accident
Shahkot: A woman was killed in a road accident caused by a stray animal on Wednesday. Investigating officer (IO) Jagdev Singh said the victim had been identified as Jogindar Kaur (62), a resident of Malsian village. Daljit Kaur, wife of Tirath Singh of Mallwal village, told the police that a motorcyclist lost control of it while trying to save a stray animal and hit the victim, who was killed on the spot. The IO said the police have registered a case. The body was handed over to the family a post-mortem. OC
27-yr-old youth dies of snake bite
Nurmahal: A migrant labourer died after being bitten by a snake on Wednesday. Investigating officer (IO) Anwar Masih said the victim had been identified as Lalu Sahni(27), a resident of Bihar. Harjinder Singh, a resident of Talwann village, told the police that the victim was working in fields when a deadly snake bit him leaving him dead on the spot. The IO said the police handed over the body to the family after a postmortem. oc
dist sees 14 new covid cases
Jalandhar: As many as 14 new cases of Covid were reported from Jalandhar on Thursday. The Covid cases tally in Jalandhar reached 78,569. As many as 76,921 people have recovered from Covid in the district, while the number of active cases in Jalandhar was 68 on Thursday. No deaths were reported in Jalandhar today, the deceased tally has remained at 1579. Meanwhile, the Kapurthala district reported one new case. Kapurthala district tally now stands at 23,950. However, no new death was reported in Kapurthala and Jalandhar. The total death tally at Kapurthala until now remains at 583.
The new case includes a 40 year-old-woman, a resident of Kalru village.
