Sanju was returning after the hearing of a case in a court with his cousin Vijay Masih when his neighbour and rival Shiva Masih began shooting at them. Vijay Masih is a resident of Malah Mohalla, Ucchi Ghati, in Phillaur.

A case has been registered against three persons — Shiva Masih and Roshi, residents of Mittha Khuh in Phillaur, and Jatin, a resident of Ganna Pind in Phillaur. The trio have been booked under Sections 307, 33 and 341 of the IPC and Sections 148 and 149 of the Arms Act.
